Abstract
Leptiri (Lepidoptera) su red kukaca (Insecta) s dva para krila prekivena ljušćicama. Imaju potpunu preobrazbu te kroz svoj život prođu sve 4 faze: jajašce, ličinka (gusjenica), kukuljica te imago. Pošto se nalaze pri dnu hranidbenog lanca, tijekom evolucije su razvili mnoge načine zaštite od predatora. U ovom radu su obrađeni najčešći obrambeni mehanizmi gusjenica. Ovisno o vrsti gusjenice te vrsti predatora koji se njime hrane razvile su različite obrambene mehanizme kao npr. izrada skloništa od lišća i/ili svile, mimikrija, obrana pomoći bodlji ili otrova.
Abstract (english)
Butterflies (Lepidoptera) are an order of insects (Insecta) with two pairs of wings covered by tiny scales. They are holometabolous and go through 4 stages in their lives: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa and imago. Since they are at the bottom of the food chain, they developed many different defensive mechanisms from predators during their evolution. In this work the most common defensive mechanisms of catterpilars are reviewed. Depending on the species of caterpilar and the predator species feeding on them, they developed various defence mechanisms such as building hides from leaves and/or silk, mimicry, defense with spines or poison.
