Abstract
Rod Castor-dabar obuhvaća dvije recentne vrste, a to su sjevernoamerički dabar (C. canadensis) i euroazijski dabar (C. fiber). Dabrovi su najveći glodavci sjeverne zemljine polutke. Zbog svoje sposobnosti da mijenjaju okoliš inženjeri su ekosustava, a zbog povećavanja bioraznolikosti na staništu koje naseljavaju ključna su vrsta. U prošlosti im je prekomjeran lov desetkovao populacije, ali nizom reintrodukcija vraćeni su na veći dio prvobitnog areala. Danas im na globalnoj razini ne prijeti izumiranje. U ovom radu opisana je biologija dabra te rasprostranjenost dviju vrsta u prošlosti i danas s naglaskom na rasprostranjenost i mjere zaštite dabra u Hrvatskoj.
Abstract (english)
The genus Castor-beaver comprises two recent species: the North American beaver (C. canadensis), and the Eurasian beaver (C. fiber). Beavers are the largest rodents of the earth's northern hemisphere. Because of their ability to alter the environment they are ecosystem engineers, and because their activity increases biodiversity they are key species. Over-hunting in the past decimated their populations and distribution area, but series of reintroductions returned them on the most of their original range. Today, they are not globally threatened with extinction. In this paper, biology of the beaver, and past and present distribution of two species is described, with emphasis on the distribution and measures for protection of beaver in Croatia.
