Abstract (english) Bosnia and Herzegovina is aseismically active area with a lot of strong earthquakes which happened on its area, especially in areas of Banja Luka and southern Herzegovina. However, our knowledge of the seismicity of Bosnia and Herzegovina is largely limited to the seismicity of 20th century, i.e. on the period after 1906 when the first seismograph was installed in Sarajevo. For better knowledge on seismic hazard and risk in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the areas adjacent to it, especially the area of southern Dalmatia, better knowledge of historical seismicity is one of the important steps we can make. Therefore, this work describes the results of a search in the historic documents for earthquakes which happened in pre-instrumental time and which can help to broaden the knowledge of seismicity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its adjacent areas. Documents used in this work are different chronicles, letters of state officials, newspaper articles and sometimes even a religious document whose backpage was used to note an earthquake. The earthquakes that are found, which do not exist in the Croatian earthquake catalogue, have shown very good correlation with the areas of higher seismicity which are based on instrumental data. The most significant event which has been found is an earthquake from 1663. which was felt within tensity VIIo-VIIIo of MSK scale in Sarajevo. The found results widen the knowledge about seismicity and seismic hazard in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and should be used in future analysis of seismic hazard and seismic risk of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
