Abstract
Azobenzeni se koriste u mnogim područjima znanosti. S obzirom na njihova funkcionalna svojstva, često nailaze na primjenu, posebice u kemijskoj industriji. Iako postoje različite metode sinteze azobenzena, metoda sprezanja je najčešće korištena jer daje produkte s najvećim prinosom. Reakcija se temelji na diazotaciji aromatskih amina kako bi nastale elektrofilne vrste koje zatim reagiraju s aromatskim nukleofilima, supstituiranim arenima koji sadrže donorske skupine. Zbog dvostruke veze azobenzeni mogu postojati u dvije konfiguracije, cis- i trans- odnosno Z- i E-, od kojih je stabilniji trans-, odnosno E-izomer. Azobenzeni apsorbiraju u UV i vidljivom dijelu spektra. Zbog sposobnosti apsorpcije te fotoizomerizacije, azobenzeni nailaze na primjenu u biološkim sustavima, nelinearnoj optici te pohranjivanju podataka.
