Object of this master thesis is the role of events in urban tourism, with the focus on the City of Zagreb. Goals of the paper are: (1) to investigate characteristics and motivation of visitors of the Advent in Zagreb, (2) to determine the impact of the Christmas Fair on development of tourism in Zagreb, and to (3) investigate the attitude of the local population on spatial transformation of the city related to the event. The initial chapters give a review of theoretical background of development of event tourism in cities and of urban tourism in general. This paper presents examples of annual event schedules in the European cities of Budapest and Zagreb, which have led to strong tourism development. After the review of event and urban tourism in Zagreb, the paper focus on the Advent in Zagreb and its role in development of urban tourism in Zagreb. The analysis includes characteristics of visitors of the Advent in Zagreb, their motives for visiting Zagreb and activities during their stay. It also includes the analysis of the attitude of the local population on the existing concept of event tourism development and issues of tourism development in general. Basic research methods that was used in this analysis are questionnaire survey and interviews. Questionnaire survey included visitors of Advent in Zagreb and local residents. Interviews include relevant actors in tourism in the City of Zagreb. Research results reveal main advantages and issues of present development of event tourism in Zagreb and give recommendations to improve it.
