Abstract
Spužve su sesilni organizmi sa brojnim šupljinama, komorica, cijevi i kanala kroz koji struji voda. Spužvarstvo je zastupljeno u Hrvatskoj od 17. stoljeća sa početkom na otoku Krapnju. Kao unosan posao spužvari su prvo vadili ostima spužve do dubine od 16 metara. Razvitkom ronilačke opreme, prvenstveno teške ronilačke opreme dosezali su mnogo veće dubine. Vađenje, mehanička i kemijska prerada spužve ovise o njenoj krajnjoj kvaliteti . Zbog velike komercijalne potražnje, prirodna staništa su se razrijedila te je Grgur Bučić započeo istraživanja o umjetnom uzgoju spužava. Zbog iznimno kvalitetne komercijalne spužve koja se vadi iz Jadranskog mora bitna je njena zaštita kako bi se omogućila obnova i rast populacije na njezinim prirodnim staništima.
Abstract (english)
Sponges are sessile organisms with numerous cavities, chambers, pipes and channels though which water flows. Sponge –making has been present in Croatia since the 17th century with its origins on island of Krapanj. As lucrative business, the sponge man first extracted the sponges with a trident to a depth of 16 meters. With the development of diving equipment, primarily heavy diving equipment, they reached much greater depths. Extraction, mechanical and chemical processing of sponge depend on its final quality. Due to high commercial demand, natural habitats became thinner and Grgur Bučić began research on artificial sponge farming. Due to the extremely high-quality commercial sponge extracted from the Adriatic Sea, its protection is essential in order to enable the renewal and growth of the population in its natural habitats.
