The doline popularly called “The Sovjak pit” is a location highly contaminated with different types of hazardous industrial waste which was disposed of in it from 1956 to 1990, mostly from the wider area of City of Rijeka. The location around the pit is densely populated and characterized by karst terrain which is generally very sensitive to groundwater pollution due to its water permeability. Such an unplanned landfill degrades the quality of the landscape and life conditions and thus probably has a negative impact on people, and flora and fauna. Since 1987, research works have been carried out in the area of the pit in order to determine the amount and properties of the waste, its impact on the environment and to plan the long-awaited remediation. It was concluded that part of the waste was washed into the soil over time by precipitation and wastewater, but the potential impact on groundwater is difficult to assess due to the lack of detailed hydrological research. There are 4 layers of waste that have been separated over time, and each must be given special attention during remediation. After removing the waste to the desired level, the doline will be systematically buried with inert material. During the remediation, it is necessary to implement environmental protection measures and maintain quality communication with the surrounding population.
