Abstract
Patogeni mikroorganizmi koji uključuju neke bakterije, parazitske praživotinje i gljivice predstavljaju veliki zdravstveni problem za organizme koje inficiraju. Trepetljikaši su velika skupina praživotinja koja uglavnom nastanjuje slatke vode, more i kapilarnu vodu tla, većinom su slobodnoživući i „pasu“ mikroorganizme među kojima su i neki patogeni. Zbog toga postoji mogućnost da se koriste kao alternativna metoda regulacije veličine patogenih populacija u prirodnim i umjetnim ekosustavima. Nedavno je dokazano da korištenje trepetljikaša u te svrhe može biti rizično jer ih neke patogene bakterije koriste kao rezervoare u kojima se razmnožavaju, preživljavaju nepovoljne uvjete i horizontalnim prijenosom primaju nove gene poput onih za otpornost na antibiotike što ih čini virulentnijima. To je jedan od razloga zašto je potrebno još istraživanja i promatranja ponašanja samih trepetljikaša, ali i njihove interakcije s patogenima jer se na taj način može stvoriti nova sigurna metoda za borbu protiv patogena mikroorganizma bez štetnih posljedica na okoliš i druge organizme.
Abstract (english)
Pathogenic microorganisms which include some bacteria, parasitic protozoa and fungi are a big problem for organisms they infect. The ciliates are big group of mostly free-living organisms who generally inhabit in fresh waters, sea and soils and graze microorganisms including some pathogens. Thus, they can be used as alternative method to regulate size of pathogenic populations in natural and artificial environments. It was recently shown that exploitation of ciliates in that way could be hazardous because some pathogenic bacteria use them as reservoirs in which they can replicate, survive in unfavourable conditions and through horizontal transfer of genes gain new genes like those which cary information for antibiotic resistance and that can increase their virulence. That is one of the many reasons why further researches and examinations on behaviour of ciliates and their interactions with pathogens are necessary. In that way, a new and safe method without harmful consequences for environment and other organisms can be developed and used against pathogenic microorganisms.
