Abstract
Šume mangrova javljaju se u većini tropskih i subtropskih litoralnih područja u zoni plime i oseke i predstavljaju jedan od najproduktivnijih i najkompleksnijih morskih ekosustava. Vodenim staništima rijetko kada dominiraju biljke, no mangrove su jedne od njih i čine ključnu kariku između kopnenih i vodenih ekosustava. Mangrove imaju niz bitnih funkcija: ublažavaju efekte klimatskih promjena uslijed globalnog zatopljenja, skladište znatne količine asimiliranog ugljika u sediment (tzv. blue carbon) i štite obale od erozije. Osim toga mangrove akumuliraju sedimente, pročišćuju vodu i čine ključno stanište posebice za akva i avifaunu. Stanovnici obalnih regija nerijetko su socijalno-ekonomski direktno vezani za mangrovu, te resurse dobivene iz ekosustava koriste kao primarni izvor za stvaranje prihoda. Iz tog razloga neophodno je mudro i ekološki orijentirano upravljanje ekosustavom mangrova kako bi upotreba resursa bila održiva i kako bi se maksimalno minimizirala antropogena devastacija već ionako ugroženog ekosustava.
Abstract (english)
Mangrove forests occur in most tropical and subtropical littoral areas in the tidal zone and represent one of the most productive and complex marine ecosystems. Aquatic habitats are rarely dominated by plants, but mangroves are one of them and form a key link between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Mangroves have a number of important functions: they mitigate the effects of climate change due to global warming, store significant amounts of assimilated carbon in sediment (so-called blue carbon) and protect coasts from erosion. In addition, mangroves accumulate sediments, purify water and form a key habitat, especially for aqua and avifauna. Residents of coastal regions are often socio-economically directly linked to mangroves, and use ecosystem-derived resources as their primary source of income generation. For this reason, wise and ecologically oriented management of the mangrove ecosystem is necessary in order for the use of resources to be sustainable and in order to minimize the anthropogenic devastation of the already endangered ecosystem.
