Mucins are glycoproteins of high molecular weight. They lubricate and protect the mucosa and create a permeable layer for the exchange of gases and nutrients with the epithelium. Histochemically, mucins can be classified into two major groups, acidic and neutral mucins. The mucus in the cervix changes cyclically under the influence of estrogen and progesterone and thus affects a woman’s fertility. Since mucins are the main component responsible for the biophysical properties of cervical mucus, it is possible that mucins with different acidity properties affect the properties of mucus. The aim of this study was to compare the proportions of acidic and neutral mucins in glandular cells of the upper and lower cervical canal on endocervical human tissue samples and to compare the proportions of acidic and neutral mucins with serum sex hormone levels. Endocervical tissue and blood samples were taken from 15 subjects who underwent surgery (hysterectomy). Acid mucins in endocervical tissue were shown by staining with Alcian blue, and neutral mucins by reaction with Schiff periodic reagent. The results of the study showed that there is no correlation between the position of the glands and the proportion of neutral and acidic mucins or the phase of the cycle and the proportion of neutral and acidic mucins. Also, there is no correlation between sex hormone levels and the proportion of neutral and acidic mucins. It is necessary to further investigate these correlations, in a larger number of subjects and with the participation of younger reproductive age.
