Abstract
U ovom diplomskom radu napravljen je pregled teorije standardnog modela u kojem smo pobliže opisali njegovu strukturu, a potom i objasnili ulogu elementarnih čestica. Potom smo dali matematički opis teorije preko grupa simetrije i opisali međudjelovanje jake, slabe i elektromagnetske sile preko baždarnih Lagrangiana. U kratkim crtama smo opisali osnovne mehanizme nastanka i raspada Higgsovog bozona od kojih smo neke koristili u daljnjoj analizi. Dotakli smo se i samog CERN-a i LHC-a, te opisali osnovne algoritme rekonstrukcije raspadnutih čestica, čije produkte možemo detektirati. Kako teorija SM-a ne predviđa masu Higgsovog bozona, morali smo se koristiti statističkom analizom obrade podataka kako bi iščitali istu. Za najpribližnije određivanje prave vrijednosti mase Higgsovog bozona koristili smo se maximum likelihood metodom, a alat koji nam je pomogao u prilagođavanju podataka na funkciju i grafičko prezentiranje rezultata je bio programski paket RooFit. Prema teoriji SM-a konstruirali smo double Crystal ball funkciju, koja se u konačnici pokazala jako dobro prilikom uspoređivanja s pravim podatcima. Konačni dobiveni rezultat za masu Higgsovog bozona je \(m^{4µ}_ H = 124,96 ± 0,17 (stat.)^{+0,27}_{−0,28} (sist.)\) GeV, a usporedbom tog rezultata s onima iz CERN-a vidimo slaganje unutar pogreške.
Abstract (english)
This thesis first presents an overview of the standard model (SM), describing its structure in more detail before explaining the role of elementary particles. Afterwards, a mathematical description of the symmetry group theory is given and followed up with a description of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions described by corresponding Lagrangians. The basic mechanisms of the production and decay of the Higgs boson is also described, giving accent to the ones used in the further analysis. Furthermore, CERN and the LHC are mentioned and basic algorithms for the particle reconstruction are described. Since the SM theory does not predict the mass of the Higgs boson, a statistical analysis of the data is performed to extract the measured value. In particular, a maximum likelihood method is exploited and the tool used to perform the actual analysis and present the graphical results was the RooFit software package. To properly describe simulated data we constructed a double Crystall ball function. The final result obtained for the mass of the Higgs boson was found to be \(m^{4µ}_ H = 124,96 ± 0,17 (stat.)^{+0,27}_{−0,28} (syst.)\) GeV and when compared with previous results from CERN it was found to be in an agreement within the measurement uncertainty.
