Abstract
Ljudski mikrobiom stanište je \(10^{13}\) raznolikih mikroorganizama. Većina njih nalazi se u probavom traktu, odnosno debelom crijevu, u kojem se uslijed kontakta s infektivnim tlom mogu naći organizmi poznati kao “zemljom prenosivi nematodi”. Trichuris trichiura vrsta je nematoda iz ove skupine koja nastanjuje probavni trakt preko pola milijarde ljudi koji žive u tropskim područjima. Trichuris muris njegov je dobro istraženi homolog, te prirodni patogen glodavaca, koji služi kao model za istraživanja trihurijaze u ljudi i općenitog utjecaja prisutnosti crvolikih parazita unutar crijeva domaćina. Od velikog je interesa za znanost njihov utjecaj na mikrobiom u cijelosti, te interakcije koje direktno i indirektno ostvaruju sa crijevnim epitelom i mikrobnim zajednicama domaćina. Razumijevanje mehanizama kojima se ovi organizmi služe da bi uspješno opstali u izazovnom okolišu ljudskog i životinjskog probavnog trakta, kao i modifikacije bakterijskih sastava prostora crijeva koje nastanjuju mogli bi pružiti bolji uvid u principe imunomodulacije, i unaprijediti dosadašnja saznanja o funkciji i značaju određenih crijevnih bakterija za zdravlje i dobrobit čovjeka.
Abstract (english)
The human microbiome is the habitat of \(10^{13}\) diverse microorganisms. Most of these are found in the digestive tract, primarily in the large intestine, in which, upon close contact with infected soil, organisms popularly called “soil-transmitted helminths” can also be found. One nematode species belonging to this group is Trichuris trichiura which inhabits the digestive tract of more than half a billion people residing in tropical areas. Trichuris muris, its well-studied homologue, a natural parasite in rodents, serves as a model for the study of human trichuriasis and the general influence of the presence of worm-like parasites in the gut of their hosts. Their impact on the host microbiome as a whole and the way they interact directly and indirectly with the intestinal epithelium and microbial communities in the host gut is of great interest to the scientific community. Understanding the mechanisms these organisms use to successfully survive in the challenging environment of the human or animal digestive tract, as well as changes in the bacterial composition of the intestinal sites they inhabit could provide greater insight into the principles of immune modulation and build on current knowledge of the function and importance of specific gut bacteria for human health and well-being.
