Abstract
Dijabetes (diabetes mellitus) ili šećerna bolest je kronična metabolička bolest koja nastaje uslijed oštećenja β-stanica gušterače koje luče inzulin ili kao posljedica rezistencije tkiva na inzulin. Inzulin je hormon koji regulira šećer u krvi. Kada inzulin nije prisutan u dovoljnim količinama ili više nije djelotvoran u samom organizmu dolazi do povišene razine šećera u krvi. Najpoznatiji i najbolje istraženi oblici dijabetesa su: dijabetes tipa 1 (inzulin ovisan) i dijabetes tipa 2 (neovisan o inzulinu). U trudnoći je moguća pojava gestacijskog dijabetesa. Uglavnom nastaje u drugom tromjesečju zbog inzulinske rezistencije. U današnje vrijeme uslijed stresnog i sjedilačkog načina života sve više svjedočimo porastu šećerne bolesti, pa se često govori o globalnoj epidemiji. Pretilost, tjelesna neaktivnost te brojni drugi čimbenici mogu potaknuti razvoj dijabetesa, ali i njegovih kroničnih komplikacija. Dijabetes je glavni uzrok sljepoće, zatajenja bubrega, srčanog i moždanog udara te amputacije donjih udova.
Abstract (english)
Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a chronic metabolic disease that results from damage to the pancreatic β-cells that secrete insulin or as a result of tissue resistance to this hormone. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. When insulin is not present in sufficient amounts or is no longer effective in the body, elevated blood glucose levels occur. The best known and most researched forms of diabetes are type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) and type 2 diabetes (insulin-independent). Gestational diabetes can occur during pregnancy. It occurs mainly in the second trimester due to insulin resistance. Due to stressful and sedentary lifestyles, there is an increasing number of diabetes cases today, often referred to as a global epidemic. Obesity, lack of exercise and numerous other factors can contribute to the development of diabetes and its chronic complications. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and lower limb amputations.
