Abstract
Američka agava (Agave americana L.) je višegodišnja biljka iz porodice Asparagaceae. Podrijetlom je iz Meksika i južnih krajeva Sjeverne Amerike, a danas je introducirana u brojne dijelove svijeta, pa tako i u Hrvatsku. Vrijednost agave čovjek je prepoznao vrlo rano, upotrebljavajući ju u svakodnevnom životu kao izvor hrane i materijala. Danas se najviše upotrebljava kao dekorativna biljka zbog svog atraktivnog izgleda. Kserofitska je biljka s velikim, mesnatim listovima, raspoređenim zavojito oko male, ponekad neuočljive stabljike, formirajući tako lisnu rozetu. Osim u dekorativne svrhe, koristi se i za proizvodnju pića, dobivanje vlakana, kao ljekovito sredstvo te ima mnoštvo drugih primjena. U Hrvatskoj se od vlakana američke agave izrađuje čipka. Cilj ovog rada je ukazati na sistematski položaj agave unutar jednosupnica, morfološke osobitosti, njen životni ciklus, uzgoj, kemijski sastav i uporabu.
Abstract (english)
Agave americana (Agave americana L.) is a perennial plant from the Asparagaceae family. Originally from Mexico and the southern parts of North America, today it has been introduced into numerous parts of the world, including Croatia. The value of agave was recognised long ago, and agave has long been used as a source of food and material. Today, it is mostly used as a decorative plant because of its attractive appearance. It is xerophytic plant with large, fleshy leaves, arranged curving around a small, sometimes unobtrusive stem, thus forming a leaf rosette. In addition to decorative purposes, it is also used for the manufacture of beverages, fiber, as a healing agent, and also has many other uses. In Croatia, lace is made from american agave fibers. The aim of this paper is to point out the systematic position of the agave within the monocotyledons, the morphological characteristics of american agave, its life cycle, cultivation, chemical composition and use.
