The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of international adoption, respectively, to present the procedure, characteristics of international adopters and adoptees, but also an overview of the statistics of international adoption in Croatia and the world. The number of international adoption in Croatia is very small, but the number of requests for adopting the children from Croatia also gets smaller. International adoption brings numerous challenges for adopters, but even more for adoptees. Adoptees had been socialized in their culutre of origin and by the international adoption they arrive to the new culture in which they shall assimilate. There is also the challenge of identity formation for adoptees, as a result of interaction between two cultures. In the whole process there is a great role of adopters, in fact, of their preparedness for potential challenges, education about international adoption and the support which they provide to adoptees, but also the one they receive from the environment and experts. An important source of support for adopters in the process of international adoption could be social workers – in giving the information about their rights, obligations, consultation etc.
