The aim of this research is to gain insight into the stressful and traumatic experiences of young people with behavioral disorders from the perspective of experts in residental care. 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts from residental care in the city of Zagreb. Analysis of the obtained results yielded answers to three research questions. The first research question was about all the traumas and stresses that young people with behavioral disorders experienced. The results have shown that their trauma is primarily related to family and family relationships; neglect and domestic abuse, illness and poor material abilities. Next, the reactions to those experiences, that was recognized by the experts, were then examined. While traumatic experiences in some have caused various internalized problems and body reactions, others have bursty emotional and behavioral reactions. Experts have also recognized the consumption of various addictive drugs, school problems, poorer concentration and excessive need for care. The third research question was about young people coping strategies with reactions to the events that they experienced, and the results showed that some defense mechanisms appear in some and they do not want to face it, while others have a need to talk about it. Young people with behavioral problems have different stressful and traumatic experiences and it is important for experts to recognize their responses to these events so they could work more successfully with youth to overcome them.
