Work plays a central role in economic, social and political spheres of human existence and also a central part in a person's life. That's why unemployment is considered to be an issue of great importance for the individual as well as the society. Unemployment is caused by differences in labour market's supply and demand and by economic unstability. Economic crisis and labour market crisis create higher percentages of unemployed people. Transitional countries saw a surge of unemployment caused by transit from socialism to capitalism. On an individual level poor mental health, poor work attitude and bad self-image increase the risk of getting unemployed. Types of people more likely to be unemployed are the ones with specific psychosocial characteristics such as people with disability, older people, long-term unemployed, unqualified workers with lower socio-economic status and lower level of education. Unemployment has consequences on economic, political and social level and has a negative effect on a person's mental and physical health. To minimise and prevent unemployment investments in educational programmes are considered necessary, especially in programmes aimed at low employability groups.
