Although, both in Croatia and in the world is no longer disputed the importance of helping professions for people in need, only a question of concern for the mental health of helpers is still marginalized. Therefore, in this paper will be explained the way and the consequences how work with traumatized people affects helpers mental health with an aim on helpers secondary traumatization. This phenomen is one of the consequences of working with people in need, which is usually ignored compared with professional stress and burnout. This is supported by the fact that so far in Croatia has not been conducted any research on this subject. At the beginning of the work the term of trauma will be defined, explained the symptoms of trauma and indicated reactions on trauma. Afterwards, psychological effects on helpers working with traumatized people will be indicated. In particular will be explained secondary traumatization and its impact on helpers work and life. At the end will be shown ways to help professionals who are often in contact with individuals who have experienced trauma.
