The aim of this diploma thesis is to give an insight into the existing empirical and theoretical knowledge on the topic mentioned in the title of the work. Talking about internalizing behavioral problems among young people and how self-image, affects the development of the same. These two constructs are inseparable and closely linked. Self image is developed by the our look in the eyes of others, ie. feedback from important people from our environment influences the development of positive or negative self-image. Young people who perceive sense of self negative will be more likely to develop internalizing behavior problems than people who have a clear and positive sense of self. Internalizing problems that are mentioned in this theoretical work and lead in interaction with self image are anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies and eating disorders as a group of problems that most affects young people. We set up three hypotheses from Sullivan's interpersonal theory and review of empirical findings, we concluded that a negative self-image is predictor of internalizing behavioral problems among young people, especially depression. If self-image represents a protective factor from anxiety, and an important source of information about us, our environment, as well as the defense of information that are inconsistent with our self-image, ie. as a result of negative social experiences, there is separation, loneliness and depression. The third hypothesis suggests that the internalizing problems prevalent among female sex, we review the literature and empirical findings and confirmed that hypothesis.
