Stavovi o medijskoj reprezentaciji osoba s invaliditetom problematizirani su kroz tri komponente: emocionalni doživljaj medijske reprezentacije invaliditeta, prihvaćenost medijskih sadržaja u kojima sudjeluju osobe s invaliditetom i percepcija medijske reprezentacije osoba s invaliditetom.
Abstract (english) The media representation of people with disabilities can have a formative effect on public attitudes towards people with disabilities. The aim of this study was to examine attitudes of adult Croatian citizens on media representation of persons with disabilities. The survey was conducted via online questionnaire on a convenient sample of 1,133 respondents. Attitudes about the media representa-tion of persons with disabilities were problematized through three components: emotional experi-ence of media representation of disability, acceptance of media content involving people with disa-bilities and the perception of media representations of people with disabilities. Results obtained in-dicate statistically significant differences with regard to the individual characteristics of the re-spondents in relation to the components. In terms of emotional experience of media representation of disability statistically significant differences are revealed with regard to gender, age, territorial affiliation, employment and marital status, while there are no statistically significant differences based on the attained level of education and size of place of residence. Statistically significant dif-ferences exist by gender, age, educational attainment, territorial origin and size of place of residence with regard to the acceptance of media content involving people with disabilities people with disa-bilities, while there are no statistically significant differences based on employment and marital sta-tus of the respondents. Statistically significant differences were found in relation to the perception of media representations of people with disabilities in terms of age, educational attainment, em-ployment status, size of place of residence, marital status, while there are no statistically significant differences based on gender and territorial affiliation. Research results show that respondents, de-pending on individual characteristics, have different experience of media representation of disability. One can therefore conclude that the media promotes prejudice and stereotypes about people with disabilities and media representation of disability affects the perception of people with disabilities in society.
