A stimulating and healthy environment is extremely important for a child's proper emotional and physical development. Family, thus, has a crucial role in child’s development. Family needs to respond to the child's needs, provide support and safety, teach a child empathy and prosocial behavior as well as to provide a child with healthcare and education. Since parents influence the child's development through their behavior and upbringing, they can also have a negative impact on the child and even neglect or abuse him/her. Furthermore, children represent a group of individuals who need special protection because of their age and their inability to live independently. Due to the aforementioned and the community’s awareness of the importance of the child's growth and proper development, the legal status of the child is regulated by international documents as well as national legislation. Child’s rights which are considered to be the most important ones are the right of the child to live with parents, the right to health, the right to education, the right to upbringing, the right to protection from violence. If parents violate the child's rights, state institutions are obliged to take measures of family law protection.
