Abstract (english) The Roma population today is among the marginalized groups in our society teetering on the brink of existence which affect all segments of their lives. Among the Roma, children are by far the most vulnerable, especially in terms of education. The Roma children have low participation in the primary level of education with high drop-out rates;these facts stem from their difficult financial situation and deepen it further. In order to improve the standards ofliving and social position of the Roma minority in Croatia, we need to engage more in their education and put more stress on the integration of Roma children in schools. The purpose of this study was gaining insight in the integration of Roma children in the primary education and preventing their stigmatization in primary schools in Podturen and Pitomača and the Center for education and rehabilitation in Virovitica. The qualitative study conducted for this purpose included seven participants (four teachers – one male, three females, two teaching associates and a social worker). Semi-structured interviews used for data collecting had questionnaires concerning the issues of the study and open coding sources were used in data processing. The results show that Roma children are well integrated in school activities and extracurricular activities, they are well accepted by non-Roma children, they have poor school performance due to the lack of learning skills and social skills, they have higher levels of repeating grades and primary school drop-outs; if they come from the families of good economic status, they have better preconditions for a better school performance. The results also indicate that there are possibilities to prevent the stigmatization of Roma children in schools such as: introducing non-Roma children to Roma culture and customs; promoting the equality with the help from teachers and school staff; helping Roma children to integrate better with the help from school authorities; implementing projects that link Roma children, parents and school with the help from the relevant bodies that would encourage this type of cooperation.
