Abstract Tijekom posljednjih je desetljeća povećan politički i javni interes oko sudjelovanja očeva u životu njihove djece.
Abstract (english) In recent decades, there has been an increased political and public interest in the participation of fathers in the lives of their children. This interest has been fueled by growing empirical evidence to suggest that fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives is important for children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development. Many European studies have focused on the work-life balance, including those in the Republic of Croatia, however domestic research has generally insufficiently studied one prominent policy that promotes work-life balance, namely paternity leave. Compared to the past, fatherhood has taken on many new dimensions. That being said,
paternity leave can allow fathers to practice parenting skills and be involved in their children’s life. Furthermore, it can enable them to adhere to the expectations of both traditional and new fatherhood by encouraging them to give their families both social and financial resources. However, there are many reasons why it is difficult for young fathers to find the balance between work and family. Therefore, in order to increase the participation of fathers in the upbringing of children and reduce gender inequality in the family, many countries have introduced the right to parental leave for fathers that cannot be transferred to mothers, the so-called father's quota. In addition, a Directive on work-life balance for parents and carers and repealing Council Directive 2010/18/EU (SL L 188) has been passed, which will provide fathers with a quota of at least ten days of paternity leave. However, the Republic of Croatia is still among the Member States of the European Union in which fathers use parental and paternity leave the least. Hence, we believe that it is necessary to act in organizational environments with the aim of removing stereotypes that discourage men from using paternity and parental leave, and thus offer fatherhood a status and equality.
