Abstract (english) The aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes and knowledge of Zagreb University students towards corporal punishment of children. For this purpose were examined the differences in opinions on feasibility and effectiveness of corporal punishment and beliefs about the outcomes of corporal punishment in relation to gender of students; the relationship between students' beliefs on justification and effectiveness of corporal punishment and attitudes of people from social environment towards corporal punishment and knowledge about the legal prohibition and opinion on the involvement of "third parties" if a parent hits a child.
The study was conducted on a sample of Zagreb University students (N=200) using web survey method.
The results showed that there are significant differences between the agreement with justification and effectiveness of corporal punishment, as well as beliefs about the outcomes of corporal punishment of children in relation to gender of students. Male students showed greater agreement with justification and effectiveness of corporal punishment and favorable beliefs about the outcomes of corporal punishment of children than female students. It therefore follows that students largely considered corporal punishment justified and purposeful method which teaches children what not to do, as well as to respect the authority of parents. Furthermore, it was shown that there is a statistically significant correlation between students' beliefs about the feasibility and effectiveness of corporal punishment and attitudes toward corporal punishment of their mothers, fathers, friends/relatives and doctors, whereas for other people from students' social environment there was no such statistically significant correlation. As for the awareness of the legal prohibition of corporal punishment and opinions on the inclusion of "third parties", the majority of students (60.5%) is aware of existence of a legal prohibition, while half of the students (49.5%) believe that a “third party” should intervene if parent hits a child.
Findings obtained in this study provide an overview of students' attitudes toward corporal punishment of children, which allows assessment of the frequency of such attitudes in order to determine the need for education about effective educational processes and raising awareness about the consequences of corporal punishment, since the tolerant attitudes towards the use of corporal punishment represent significant risk factor for such behavior.
