The aim of this work is systematic analysis of family law norms wich regulate establishment and contestation of maternity and paternity to protect the child's right to know his or hers own origin. By determining the origin of the child a family-legal (status) parent-child relationship is established. In that sense, in this work different mechanics for achieving rights of child to know who his parents are to enjoy their care and to achieve rights and obligations wich arise from the parent-child family relationship. Deepened are analyzed the presumption of motherhood and the presumption of paternity, paternity recognition procedures, procedures for establishing and contestation maternity and paternity by a court decision. The work also discusses in detail the role and actions of the Centre for Social Welfare, registar and other bodies involved in the process of establishing or contestaing the child's origin. Special accent is placed on the analysis of the legal position of the child in proceedings of establishing or contestaing his or her origin. All for the purpose of questioning and giving a final assessment of the compliance of Croatian law with the requirements of legal protection of the child which in this area in front of the Croatian legislator puts the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The work also discusses certain problems that have arisen in legal practice in Croatia and in some comparative systems due to incomplete regulations. the results of the analysis point to the effective protection of the child's right to know his or her own origin in Croatian law, based on a coherent system of material and procedural rules, but also on the need to conduct further research in this area, which is referred to in the concluding part of the paper with a argumentative explanation.
