Abstract | U ovom završnom radu obrađuje se osobna i obiteljska dokumentacija Vjekoslava Hengla. Predmet rada je život jednog od najuglednijih gradonačelnika Osijeka koji se održao dovoljno dugo da se projekti iz ideje pretvore u stvarnost. Ujedno njegov mandat je bio jedan od najdužih u cijeloj Kraljevini, a njegovo prezime je postalo sinonim za dobro upravljanje gradom.
Vjekoslav Hengl bio je odvjetnik i kraljevski javni bilježnik, no ono po čemu će zauvijek ostati upamćen je njegov kvalitetan rad kao gradonačelnik Osijeka. Njegova marljivost, upornost, mudrost i ljubav prema gradu bila je prepoznata od strane građana što mu je omogućilo da se održi na položaju osječkog gradonačelnika od 1920. do 1934. godine. Za vrijeme mandata pobrinuo se za povezivanje gradskih cjelina (Gornji grad, Tvrđa, Donji grad) rušenjem tvrđavskih bedema, za modernizaciju i elektrifikaciju grada te uvođenje električnog tramvaja o kojem se dugo sanjalo. Zalagao se za urbanistički razvoj grada što naravno veže velika infrastrukturna ulaganja koja su zaslužna za današnji izgled grada. Osim njegovog političkog života obradit će se i njegov vrlo zanimljiv privatni život, ali će se ujedno prikazati i atmosfera koja je vladala gradom početkom 20.st. Vjekoslav Hengl je 1906. godine oženio bogatu nasljednicu Mathildu Gillming koja će im omogućiti raskošan život. Bili su vlasnici najelitnijih nekretnina u gradu Osijeku među kojima je i zgrada današnjeg HNK i hotela pored, zgrade na današnjem trgu Ante Starčevića te zgrade današnje Gradske i sveučilišne knjižnice koju su dobili kao vjenčani dar od Mathildinih roditelja. U toj prekrasnoj vili koja se nalazila u Chavrakovoj ulici (kasnije Bulevar JNA, danas Europska avenija) živjeti će sve do 1945. godine. |
Abstract (english) | This final paper delves into the personal and family documentation of Vjekoslav Hengl. The subject of this paper is the life of one of the most prominent mayors of Osijek, which lasted long enough for projects to turn from an idea into a reality. At the same time, his term was one of the longest in the entire Kingdom, and his surname became synonymous with good city management. Vjekoslav Hengl was a lawyer and a royal notary, but what will forever be remembered for his quality work as the mayor of Osijek. His diligence, perseverance, wisdom, and love for the city were recognized by the citizens, which enabled him to hold the position of the mayor of Osijek from 1920 to 1934. During his term, he connected the city units (Upper Town, Fortress, Lower Town) by tearing down the fortress walls, modernized and electrified the city, and introduced the electric tram of which Osijek was had long dreamed of. He advocated for the urban development of the city, which of course, binds large infrastructural investments that are responsible for today's appearance of the city. Apart from his political life, his very interesting private life, and the atmosphere that ruled the city at the beginning of the 20th century will also be shown. In 1906, Vjekoslav Hengl married the rich heiress Mathilda Gillming, who would enable them to live a lavish life. They were the owners of the most elite real estates in the city of Osijek, including the building of today's HNK and the hotel next door, the building on today's Ante Starčević Square and the building of today's City and University Library, which they received as a wedding gift from Mathilda's parents. They would live in this beautiful villa located in Chavrakova Street (later JNA Boulevard, today European Avenue) until 1945. |
