Alcohol is, since ancient times, very firmly woven into our culture. Drinking alcoholic beverages is an inevitable phenomenon during every celebration and various occasions, highlighting the alcohol as a socially accepted psychotic. But what happens when drinking alcohol becomes a habit, so much so that it becomes addictive. Alcohol addiction is becoming an increasing public health problem faced by todays society, and precisely because of this, the main aim of this paper is to look at all aspects of alcohol addiction, especially from a bioethical perspective. Through excessive alcohol consumption, a person sinks ever deeper into the abyss of addiction, leaving long-term and severe consequences, both on his health, his loved ones and the environment. In order to prevent the negative outcomes of alcohol addiction, various proposals have been made at the national and international level, the main goal of which is to prevent and eradicate addiction. In 2010, the Republic of Croatia adopted a national strategy related to the excessive use and abuse of alcohol, implementing it as part of the National Strategy for the Suppression of Drug Abuse, and taxes alcoholic beverages and passes laws prohibiting the dispensing and sale to persons under the age of eighteen, as well as to persons in an alcoholic state. The ethical dimension of alcohol addiction says that every addict has the right to treatment, regardless of whether he himself is guilty of creating it. In our society, there is a very clear moral obligation to provide immense support and help to people who are addicted, motivating them to heal and get on the right path in life. On the way to the prevention and cure of alcohol addiction, the most significant role and professional competences are played by the profession of social work, one of whose fundamental goals, is to improve the quality of life of addicts and their families.
