The topic of this paper is "Characteristics of working with people with Down syndrome". The paper explains the chapters related to the characteristics, rights and needs of people with Down syndrome, followed by an overview of their successful integration into the school system, ways for families to deal with the problems of children with disabilities, characteristics of people with Down syndrome, as well as the work itself and the characteristics of communication with them, explaining the connection with the use of group work as an adequate method and the role of the social worker in working with people with Down syndrome and their families. The aim of this paper is to point out the specific characteristics of working with people with Down syndrome through the presentation of their functioning in the family and the wider environment. People with Down syndrome due to chromosomal error have numerous impairments that make it impossible for them to function daily and make their development slower. To improve their quality of life, the emphasis is on educating people working in the field of working with children with disabilities, as well as families themselves. Another important factor is the positive awareness of the environment about the needs of people with Down syndrome, whose integration into all areas of life allows them to improve skills that increase feelings of independence, responsibility and level of life satisfaction. Among the many experts, the role of social workers in working with people with Down syndrome was highlighted, where using various methods such as group work and early intervention, they accelerate and improve development skills and counselling work to adequately inform parents and the environment about their abilities and to increase awareness which ultimately results in the emergence of positive attitudes of accepting the diversity among people.
