Eating disorders are a group of complex conditions that are best described by a pronounced need for control over food and body weight, primarily affecting adolescents. The main two disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. These disorders are closely linked to self-image, self-esteem, as well as states of depression and anxiety, which can be potentiated by the influential impact of social media, acting as a significant risk factor. Given that we live in a time where digitization is integrated into the life of every individual and society as a whole, it is essential to work on media literacy and raising awareness about the negative aspects of social media. It is a fact that media increasingly encroach upon the roles of school and family and influence the formation of attitudes, beliefs, norms, and value systems, shaping modes of communication, including interpersonal relationships, learning methods, and leisure activities. Media increasingly impact the socialization of children and youth, as well as a child's development, since marketing messages reach children at a very early age, before they even learn to read. Research on body image perception is alarming and clearly indicates the urgent need for preventive actions and changes in imposed societal norms regarding desirable body appearance. This effort must encompass both the educational system and families.
