Abstract
Europski parlament je jedino tijelo Europske unije koje izravno biraju građani te je jedna od najvećih demokratskih skupština na svijetu. Zastupnici, koje birači iz država članica biraju na mandat od pet godina, predstavljaju oko 500 milijuna građana Europske unije. U poslijednjih nekoliko godina, Europski parlament je dobio veliku važnost stječući brojne bitne ovlasti čime možemo istaknuti kako je on suzakonodovac na gotovo svim područjima zakonodavstva Europske unije. Uz zakonodavne ovlasti, ima veliku ulogu i u proračunu Europske unije, nadzoru i kontroli drugih institucija čime osigurava jasnu provedbu europskog sustava. Kao što su države članice Europske unije odlučile, Parlament godišnje održava dvanaest plenarnih sjednica i to u Strasbourgu, dok se zastupnici sastaju u parlamentarnim odborima u Bruxellesu, gdje se mogu organizirati i dodatne plenarne sjednice. Na sjednicam se rasprave održavaju na svim službenim jezicima Unije što odražava zauzimanje Parlamenta za raznoliku i višekulturnu Uniju „ujedinjenu u raznolikosti”.
Abstract (english)
The European Parliament is the only body of the European Union that directly chooses citizens and is one of the largest democratic assemblies in the world. Representatives elected by the electorate from the Member States for a term of five years represent about 500 million citizens of the European Union. In the last few years, the European Parliament has gained great importance in gaining a number of important powers, thus highlighting that it is a lawyer in virtually all areas of European Union legislation. With legislative powers, it has a major role in the EU budget, oversight and control of other institutions, thus ensuring a clear implementation of the European system. As the Member States of the European Union have decided, Parliament holds twelve plenary sessions annually in Strasbourg, while representatives meet in parliamentary committees in Brussels, where additional plenary sessions can be held. At a session, discussions are held in all the official languages of the Union, reflecting the involvement of the Parliament for a diverse and multicultural Union "united in diversity".
