The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established in 1993 in The Hague, Netherlands. During its mandate, which lasted until 2017, the Tribunal changed the image of international humanitarian law and proved that the high position in the state hierarchy of the suspect cannot protect them from criminal prosecution and responsibility. The Tribunal was established with the aim of investigating war crimes in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and prosecuting the ones responsible for those crimes. The international crimes that the tribunal punishes are: serious violations of the Geneva Conventions from 1949, violations of the laws and customs of war, genocide and crimes against humanity. There are several peculiarities of the Tribunal. First of all, it is its supranational character, its jurisdiction is primary over the jurisdiction of domestic courts. Furthermore, the ad hoc character of the Tribunal indicates that it was established with a limited duration, after which the so-called residual mechanism was established. A total of 161 people were indicted for serious violations of international humanitarian law, and of the total number of accused, 93 were convicted.
