Abstract
Europski parlament važan je forum za političke rasprave i donošenje odluka na razini EU-a. Zastupnike u Europskom parlamentu izravno biraju glasači u svim državama članicama. Zastupnici zastupaju interese glasača pri izradi zakona EU-a te osiguravaju da ostale institucije EU-a rade na demokratski način. Uloga europskog parlamenta je izravno izabrano tijelo EU-a sa zakonodavnom, nadzornom i proračunskom odgovornošću Parlament ima 705 članova koji u zapravo poslanici u Europskom parlamentu. Europski parlament je osnovan 1952. godine kao zajednička skupština Europske zajednice za ugljen i čelik, 1962. kao Europski parlament, prvi izravni izbori 1979. godine. Članovi u Europski parlament iz Republike Hrvatske biraju se na temelju općeg, slobodnog i jednakog biračkog prava, neposredno na izborima tajnim glasovanjem na mandat od pet godina.
Abstract (english)
The European Parliament is an important forum for political debate and decision-making at EU level. Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by voters in all Member States. MEPs represent the interests of voters in the drafting of EU law and ensure that other EU institutions work in a democratic way. The role of the European Parliament is a directly elected EU body with legislative, oversight and budgetary responsibility. Parliament has 705 members who are in fact Members of the European Parliament. The European Parliament was established in 1952 as the Joint Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community, in 1962 as the European Parliament, the first direct elections in 1979. Members of the European Parliament from the Republic of Croatia are elected on the basis of universal, free and equal suffrage, directly in elections by secret ballot for a term of five years.
