Abstract
Neurodegenerativne bolesti zbog sve većeg broja ljudi u dobi od 65 godina i više predstavljaju veliki izazov za društvo u cjelini. U neurodegenerativne bolesti su kronične, progresivne bolesti širokog spektra koje negativno utječu na neurone i posljedično se manifestiraju brojnim stanjima. Ove se bolesti često povezuju sa starenjem organizma, a kako starenjem dolazi do povećanog stvaranja slobodnih radikala, istraživanjima se potvrdilo kako bi visok unos antioksidanasa mogao usporiti degenerativne procese na neuronima. Koenzim Q10 se ističe u smislu potencijalne učinkovitosti kako u smislu prevencije, tako i u smislu liječenja početnih stadija Alzheimerove i Parkinsonove bolesti, dvije najčešće neurodegenerativne bolesti. Koenzim Q10 se prirodno nalazi u organizmu a koncentracija mu opada starenjem. Prisutan je i u različitoj hrani, no u smislu liječenja potrebno je uzimati visoke doze koje su moguće jedino putem dodataka prehrani. Koenzim Q10 je potentan antioksidans koji ima sposobnost primanja i prijenosa elektrona čime stabilizira slobodne radikale odgovorne za oštećenja neurona.
Abstract (english)
As the number of people of 65 and older increases, neurodegenerative diseases became a major challenge for the society as a whole. Neurodegenerative diseases are a broad-spectrum of chronic, progressive diseases that negatively affect neurons and consequently manifest in a number of conditions. They are often associated with the aging, and since aging results in increased free radical production, studies have confirmed that high intake of antioxidants can slow the degenerative processes on the neurons. Coenzyme Q10 stands out in terms of potential efficacy both for the prevention and the treatment of the initial stages of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, the two most common neurodegenerative diseases. Coenzyme Q10 is naturally present in the body, but its concentration decreases with aging. It is also highly abundant in foods, but in terms of treatment, high doses are necessary which are available only in dietary supplements. Coenzyme Q10 is a potent antioxidant that has the ability to receive and transfer electrons, thereby stabilizing the free radicals responsible for the degeneration of the neurons.
