As part of the VEPAR project (Water-ecological monitoring, analysis and solutions), funded by the European Regional Development Fund, and implemented by Hrvatske vode and the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) with Geokon-Zagreb d.d. as a contractor, in the period from May to October 2021, the condition of the of the 1st order waterflow floodbanks of the pannonian part of the Republic of Croatia was reviewed. The research included floodbanks with a total length of 1,460 km. Based on existing data and data from previous geotechnical expolorations, general geological, engineering geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the observed area were determined through preliminary cabinet research; and a cartographic basis for the field phase of the research was prepared. A reconnaissance of the entire study area (app. 30,000 km2) was carried out, during which all floodbanks were visually inspected and detailed data on hazard indicators in the field were collected. A GIS database on the current condition of the floodbank was developed and categorized, within which the floodbank sections were assessed as stable, conditionally stable or unstable. This paper presents the concept of this part of the research, data collection and analysis, as well as the research results. The application of the results and the purpose of the preliminary research was to set priorities and plan detailed field research of critical sections of the floodbank, in order to assess the geotechnical conditions in the floodbank and the foundation soil. The results of geotechnical research will enable the definition of guidelines for further actions which, depending on the condition of the floodbank, consist of regular and enhanced maintenance or remediation of the floodbank, with the ultimate purpose of flood risk management in the Republic of Croatia.
