The topis of this master thesis was “Cathodic Protection of Ships”. Although metal materials are the most prevelant in the shipbuilding industry, this thesis is based primarly on forms of corrosion, corrosion behavior and the methods which protect metal materials from corrosion. This master thesis is devided into two larger units from wise. The first in which the forms of corrosion induced destruction and corrosion protection methods are defined in detail and the second in which cathodic protection and its practical application in the shipbuilding industry are discussed. The first unit of work consists of three parts. The first part clarifies the concept of corrosion and corrosion activity and gives a historical review of its understanding and awereness of its persistance and presence in everyday life and the development of science and technology. In the second part, corrosion is devided according to the mechanism of the corrosion process and according to the form of corrosion destruction. For each type of corrosion, its principle and conditions of formations are described in detail, i.e. internal and external factors. Also, for each type of corrosion are given examples and images of its occurrence in mechanical engineering practice. The third part also mentions the described methods of corrosion protection used in shipbuilding, with regard to the advantages, disadvantages and trends of development of these methods. The second unit refers to the application of cathodic protection in practice. It contains a historical review of the development of cathodic protection in shipbuilding and explains in more detail the application of all forms of cathodic protection in the shipbuilding industry.
