Abstract (english) The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many aspects of everyday life, including education. On March 16, 2020, distance learning was introduced in the Republic of Croatia, which also included studies of dental medicine. Given that the study of dental medicine involves practical work, and that the introduction of distance learning has significantly affected the education and the way of teaching, the aim of the study was to determine whether students and teachers have the necessary prerequisites for distance learning, analyze their views on distance learning, and if they find the idea on the potential introduction of lectures and seminars (which do not require practical work) taught at distance as one of the permanent ways of training acceptable. The research was conducted on all four institutions that teach dental medicine in
the Republic of Croatia: School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb, Faculty of Dental medicine University of Rijeka, Study of Dental medicine at University of Split School of Medicine and Faculty of Dental medicine and Health at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. Online questionnaires were made in Google Forms, and then distributed by e-mail and
social networks to students and teachers of dental medicine studies. The responses received from 246 students and 111 teachers were processed in Microsoft Excel (2003) and R Core Team (2021). The research shows that the vast majority of students and teachers have the necessary prerequisites for distance learning. The students’ attitude on distance learning in
relation to the time before the pandemic and the necessity of its implementation is positive, while teachers remain neutral. The majority of students and teachers believe that laboratory, preclinical and clinical exercises taught online cannot replace the “live” exercises with equal quality. At the same time, the majority of students (79.4%) and teachers (66.7%) support the
potential introduction of lectures and seminars (which do not require practical work) at a distance as one of the permanent ways of training – either in the form of online lectures and seminars in full or as a combination of online and live lectures and seminars.
