Abstract
Parodontitis je upalna bolest koja zahvaća potporna tkiva zuba. Napredovanjem bolesti dolazi do redukcije razine kosti i stabilnosti zuba u alveoli što rezultira gubitkom zuba. Nekada se smatralo da bakterije uzrokuju destrukciju tkiva, no danas se zna da je to uravnoteženi mehanizam između biofilma koji inducira imunološki sustav domaćina na eliminaciju toga patogena. Kako su bakterije uklopljene u biofilm zaštićene od brojnih stanica obrane koje ne mogu prodrijeti u njega, imunološki sustav ne suprimira imunološki odgovor, nego nastaje kronična upala koja za posljedicu ima velik gubitak parodontnih tkiva.
Abstract (english)
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affects tooth-supporting tissues. That progression of the disease includes a reduction of bone hight and tooth stability in alveolus, which leads to tooth loss. Not too long ago, it was thought that bacteria are the main cause of tissue destruction, but as we know today, inflammatory cells play an important role in the destruction since biofilm stimulate the host's immune system to eliminate pathogens. As bacteria are protected in the biofilm that is out of reach for many immunologic cells, the immune system does not suppress the immune response. It causes chronic inflammation with the consequence of significat periodontal tissue loss.
