Constant studies bring a lot of new scientific and clinical evidence that helps us understand the relationship between inflammatory periodontal diseases and other organic systems in a body. The liver is considered one of the most important organs in our body because of its key role in a lot of physiological functions and because of that liver damage can be manifestied through other organic systems. Periodontal pathogens responsible for inflammatory periodontal disease try to find a way to other organs, and to liver as well, by invading systemic circulation. A lot of pathogenic microorganisms are able to enter the bloodstream through the ulcerated epithelium of deep periodontal pockets. Those pathogens from oral cavity can also be transported to the intestines, simply by swallowing, and consequently have an effect on the progression of liver disease. That relationship is bidirectional, which means that liver disease can also influence periodontal diseases and other oral diseases by provoking a systemic inflamation. There is a high prevalence of bad oral health and higher clinical periodontal parameters among patients with liver disease. In order to reduce or prevent this negative impact and possible side effects, it is important to explain pathogenesis of that relationship. Despite former studies, it is necessary to conduct more research in order to fully understand the mechanism of this bidirectional relationship and thereby find the proper treatment.
