Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise pathophysiological conditions affecting temporomandibular joints (TMJ), masticatory muscles or both. In the treatment of TMP, as well as bruxism, the use of occlusive splints is indicated. Occlusive splints are mobile therapeutic devices made of acrylic resin, the purpose of which is to achieve a stable position of the TMJ and to remove symptoms and pain. They are fabricated by using conventional methods, but technological development also enables digitization of the process. The use of intraoral scanners, CAD/CAM systems and 3D printing simplifies data storage and transfer, as well as communication with patients and the dental laboratories. Manufacturing errors, the number of working steps and time consumption are reduced. However, although the advantages of the digital process of occlusal splint fabrication are evident, most operators still opt for the traditional fabrication approach due to the high cost of investing in digital equipment. In the future, the goal of scientific studies is to further emphasize the potential and advantages of digital technologies and encourage their increasing application in everyday dental practice.
