Abstract | Pojam ekološka stomatologija jest pristup stomatologiji koji označava bavljenje strukom na ekološki prihvatljiv način. |
Abstract (english) | The term eco-friendly dentistry implies an approach to dentistry that involves the practice of the profession in an environmentally friendly manner. Healthcare professionals, including doctors of dental medicine, have a responsibility for the preservation of the environment, the reduction of waste production and its conscientious disposal. As the whole world turns its attention to the search for new, better, and more innovative solutions for sustainability in all sectors of the economy, but also in medicine, the aim of this thesis is to collect, analyse and compare data on the awareness, information and opinions of students and doctors of dental medicine regarding the topic of dental ecology. A total of 406 respondents, consisting of students and doctors of dental medicine from the territory of the Republic of Croatia, were included in this research. The questionnaire in the form of an online survey, created in the Google Forms programme, was distributed to the respondents by e-mail and via social networks. The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions: 3 socio-demographic questions, 10 yes/no questions examining information and knowledge about potential environmental pollutants and 7 questions examining opinions on the importance of ecology in dentistry. The research showed that the majority of the respondents had not heard of the concept of dental ecology prior to the survey. Despite this, a vast majority of students and doctors feel responsible and are aware of the damage they can potentially cause to the environment by practising dentistry. There is a need to include more educational content in dental programmes in the Republic of Croatia, which would provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about medical waste, recycling possibilities, and potential environmental pollutants in dentistry , as more than two thirds of respondents agreed with this. |
