The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of smoker's saliva in combination with tooth crèmecontaining calcium and phosphate on the enamel uptake of flouride, assuming that there is a difference in the concentration of calcium in the smoker's and non-smoker's saliva. Four enamel slabs were cut from each of the ten healthy extracted teeth and arranged into 4 groups (A, B, C, D). Unstimulated saliva samples were donated by twelve male healthy volunteers, six smokers and six non-smokers. The toothcrèmeused in the research was MI Paste Plus (GC, Alsip, Illinois, SAD). Enamel slabs of the group A were treated with smokers' saliva, and then with the tooth crèmeslurry. Group B was treated with non-smokers' saliva, rest of the procedure was the same as with the group A. Group C was treated only with tooth crème slurry. Group D served as a control group. KOH-soluble fluorides were determined by the method of Caslavska et al. and measured by ion selective electrodes. The concentrations of minerals in the saliva were measured by inductive coupled plasma with mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Friedman's test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to analyse the data. There is no statistically significant difference in the concentration of calcium, magnesium and phosphate in the saliva of smokers and non-smokers, nor is there any significant difference in their flow of saliva. The ratio of calcium and magnesium in the non-smokers' saliva was twice bigger than in smokers' saliva. There is no statistically significant difference between these groups in the amount of KOH-soluble fluorides on the enamel surface. The uptake of flourides on the enamel surface, along with a tooth crème which contains CPP-ACP complex does not depend on the mineral composition of saliva.
