The development of composite materials has begun in the 1960s, is an ongoing process today and will continue to evolve in the future. Composite materials are preferred over amalgam in restorative procedures for a number of reasons. They require less sound dental tissue to be removed, have the ability to bond to tooth structure and are aesthetically pleasing. Its composition consists of organic resin matrix which is chemically linked by a coupling agent with inorganic filler particles. During the filling of the cavity it is in soft form and after modeling it is polymerized with blue light that cures it. This creates certain problems that we try to reduce or eliminate by changing certain composite components. Some of the possible negative consequences of replacing hard tissue with composite material are post-operative sensitivity or pain, marginal staining, marginal gap that leads to secondary caries and cuspal or enamel fractures. The cause of these problems is polymerisation shrinkage of composites resulting in polymerisation stress. Technology advancements have reduced the polymerization shrinkage, but materials which completely eliminate it have not been found. There are some materials with a different composition of the organic matrix, of the fillers, or to which certain modulators were added, that successfully reduce the polymerization shrinkage. These materials belong to a group of low shrinkage composites.
