Attempts to replace existing teeth with the new ones or with teeth made of other materials are as old as human race. Various materials were used, such as seashell, precious stones, animal bones, rubber, gold and porcelain. Following the discovery of “oseointegration” by Brånemark in 1960s, modern implatology was founded based on titanium as the most suitable substance for dental implantation. In addition to its superior mechanical characteristics it is absolutely biocompatible. The only drawback is its greyish colour, which has resulted in usage of ceramics for the front jaw, resembling natural white colour of natural teeth. Throughout the history of dental implantology development, various shapes and types of dental implants were in use, but only a few are presented in today’s practise. The most common use of the implant is the shape of the root of the tooth. They can have screws which enhance mechanical stability in the bone; the roughness of its surface can be achieved by applying various substances by number of different techniques such as sandblasting and etching in order to speed up the processes of osseointegration.
