Three-dimensional (3D) printing, or additive manufacturing, is a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually by layering. There are several types of 3D printing technologies that are able to create an object in different ways and that are compatible with different types of materials. The most widespread methods for printing non-metal restorations are stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP). Materials used with these technologies are mainly polymers. These include thermoplastic materials and photopolymers that change their properties in the presence of UV radiation. The most important material is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is commonly used in prosthodontics. Printing of ceramics is not so common yet, and needs to be further investigated. The application of 3D printers in prosthodontics, of non-metal restorations in particular, is diverse. 3D printing of dental casts is increasingly replacing traditional dental stone and impression making. It is possible to print a dental cast of the whole jaw or only of a certain segment of dental arch. Custom trays, occlusal splints and surgical guides for implant placement can also be printed with 3D printers. The number of steps in a complete denture fabrication protocol that can be performed in a digital way is increasing. Denture bases and teeth are printed from a PMMA material separately and then joined together. The base of a partial denture can printed from a metal, but it is also possible to print it from a polymer or to print wax moulds for casting. Another prosthodontic application that is increasingly becoming a part of everyday dental practice is temporary crown printing. On the whole, the development of 3D printers in dental medicine is quick and advanced. Although additional research into the accuracy and costeffectiveness of 3D printers is still needed, especially clinical studies, the era of their application in dental medicine has definitely arrived.
