This paper discusses Bourdieu's concept of habitus as a constitutive element of identity which produces a certain image of reality that opens to individual the conditions and possibilities of action in accordance with their resources from cultural, economic and social capital. By applying a qualitative analysis of parents' life history, the purpose was to contribute to the understanding of dispositions about Italian kindergartens, language ideology, family language practices and strategies related to the parents' habitus. The primary reason for enrolling a child in an Italian kindergarten stems from the parent's desire for the child to learn Italian language, which is perceived as a form of investment in children's cultural, economic and social capital. Other reasons for learning Italian as well as the perception of Italian kindergartens as an important factor in building personal identity and preserving the hereditary language is determined by the background of parental experience, or habitus, but also the reactions and attitudes of the wider community towards language, its recognition and representation in society which parents encountered in childhood during early linguistic and cultural socialization, but also later in life.
