Croatian literature history is an inexhaustible well of undiscovered, unknown and unread lines. It is still hard to envelop entire Croatian literature and define the position and role of female in it. Taking in consideration history, political and social facts it is clear why it took so long for women to earn recognition in the history of literature. Through the history the role of women changed in society. Firstly they affirmed as muse, later as readers and finally as writers, although they never felt like authors. Women carried imperative of female duties and writing wasn’t one of them. Taking a look in the history of Croatian female literature carries a question where it all started. In the beginnings of Croatian female history imposes the name of Cvijete Zuzurić. Although disputed and considered a myth she remained a muse to male authors. Dragojla Jarnević took the key part in the history of Croatian women literature from Cvijete Zuzurić and proved wrong all the critics by erasing the myths about women writers. She was the first and only writer to affirm in the so called world of male writers. She anticipated women letter in her autobiographic Dairy. The so called woman letter was a result of female seeking for their place in the literature. Women letter is a phrase for fight that women have in ensuring their future in literature. It is not only a fight for women part in literature, it is a fight for women rights in the society. One of the most respected writer and fighter for women rights is Marija Jurić Zagorka, furthermore the most disputed and read female writer in the Croatian literature history. She opens the never resolved question of gender inequality and is the forerunner of new ideas in the Croatian society of that time.
