The realisation of science lesson is impossible without the usage of corresponding teaching strategies and methods. The choice of using individual teaching strategies and methods is entirely up to the teacher, as he or she is the organiser of the teaching process. In science lessons, it is possible to apply various contemporary and traditional teaching strategies and methods. This paper shows the results of a research whose purpose was to question the teachers’ opinion about the usage of contemporary and traditional teaching strategies and methods, and the frequency of their application in science and in individual activities through the lesson. The research was conducted on the sample of 101 teachers in 3 counties: Dubrovačko – neretvanska, Grad Zagreb and Zagrebačka county. The results show that teachers are more prone to using traditional teaching strategies and methods, although they have a better opinion on the contemporary methods. This result indicates that teachers are aware of the benefits of contemporary methods in science and social studies. However, the more frequent usage of traditional teaching strategies and methods is probably caused by teachers’ insufficient competence for using the contemporary ones. By observing individual stages in science and social studies lessons, it has been shown that teachers apply traditional teaching strategies and methods more during the stages of acquiring new lesson content and revision. One possible reason for that is the benefit of using traditional strategies considering the limitations of given time during the lecture. Teachers frequently use contemporary methods in the first part of the lesson, the motivation part, because those methods are by itself motivating, especially for students accustomed to traditionally structured lessons. The research has also showed that teachers apply traditional and contemporary methods in the same percentage during the practice stage, which indicates successful applications of both traditional and contemporary teaching strategies and methods during these similar teaching stages.
