Abstract Hrvatski jezik najopsežniji je predmet osnovnoškolskoga obrazovanja. U osnovnoškolskome obrazovanju djeca do šestoga razreda osnovne škole hrvatski jezik uče pet nastavnih sati tjedno, a u završnim razredima osnovne škole četiri sata tjedno. Učenici vole sate u kojima se primjenjuju kreativne jezične igre i aktivnosti jer učeći u igri nastavne sadržaje usvajaju brže i lakše.
Abstract (english) Croatian language is the most extensive school subject in primary education. From grade 1 to grade 6 students have five Croatian language lessons a week. In grade 7 and 8 there are 4 lessons a week. In spite of this, expressing themselves in Croatian mother tongue often includes elements of fear and embarrassment especially when in public. When students verbalize their thoughts and feelings, it is mostly incomplete and sketchy (Pavličević-Franić, 2005). The main purpose of Croatian language teaching is to enable students for successful communication in their mother tongue. The aim of the research therefore was to answer the question how to change the Croatian language teaching methods in order to motivate students to be more successful. The main goal of this paper was to find out how teaching methods influence the students’ attitudes towards Croatian language. The research results approve that students’ attitudes towards Croatian as a school subject are influenced by the teaching methods. Students like the lessons containing language games, because learning through playing is faster and easier. However, teacher rarely use creative language games in teaching Croatian, because it takes a lot of time and engagement. As a result, the students’ attitude towards speaking and writing skills (necessary to develop communicative competence) is extremely negative. Therefore the research results indicate that the different teaching methods are necessary. Creative, interesting and innovative techniques as well as learning through playing, will make language teaching more interesting and more appropriate. Also, a creative approach in language teaching and communication will reduce the fear of making mistakes which is often present among students.
