Peer violence today is a global problem faced by almost all children, and Coloroso (2004) defines it as deliberately recurring behavior that has the purpose of causing fear or hurt. From the consequences of violence do not only suffer victims, but also their families, as well as bullies and observers of violence. To end the cycle of violence requires much more than identifying and stopping bullies. It is necessary to examine other factors, auch as how and why the child has become a target or a bully and which factor increase the risk for violence as well as what are the factors that affect the prevention of violence (Coloroso, 2004). Valić and Brajša-Žganec (2018) state that one of protective factors is considered emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is a relatively young construct that has recently been attracting the attention of experts, and for the last twenty years, a great deal of evidence has been gathered about its importance in predicting various aspects of social functioning (Grgić, Čikeš i Ručević, 2014). Goleman (1997) considers the aggression in young people and in general throughout society proof of underdevelopment and lack of emotional intelligence, and thinks that the only way to address the problem of the lack of empathy in the worldwide promotion and development of emotional intelligence. This paper presents an overview of the literature aimed of explaining the importance of emotional intelligence and the role it plays in the development of each individual and its potential role in preventing peer violence.
