In order to move away from the uniform frontal teaching, many teachers today cherish a more contemporary approach to learning and teaching that leads to achieving better activity and encouraging the development of students creativity. In modern teaching, the student is at the center of the teaching process, and the teacher creates an environment that stimulate independent and collaborative learning. Science and social studies teaching enables many creative approaches in teaching which provides a large number of different educational games that make teaching dynamic, instructive, interesting and entertaining. The aim of this thesis is to describe the purpose of educational games in science and social studies teaching and their positive influence on students in the educational process. Educational games are not just for fun but convenient activities that enable students to learn the lessons more easily and to achieve educational outcomes. Every educational game should be organized, structured and its function should be realization of educational tasks. The first part of the thesis is about the games in general, the theories of the game and its role in the life of the child. The second part of the thesis emphasizes the importance of educational games in the educational process and their examples in science and social studies teaching. The final part of the thesis describes the results of the questionnaire for teachers which examined their opinions of using educational games in science and social studies teaching and the frequency of their application. The results show that teachers have a positive opinion of using educational games in science and social studies teaching, but they are only sometimes applied in practice.
